Sohrab Modi's magisterial historical epic recounting Alexander the Great's (Sikandar) invasion of India and his confrontation with King Porus (Puru) at the Battle of the Hydaspes. Prithviraj Kapoor's commanding presence as Alexander and Modi's own towering Puru made it the grandest Hindi film of the pre-Independence era.

The score, composed by Mir Saheb and Rafiq Ghaznavi to Pandit Sudarshan's lyrics, supports epic spectacle rather than intimate song. Its standout was the marching-beat 'Zindagi Hai Pyaar Se' (Khan Mastana); patriotic and awakening numbers like 'Jeete Desh Hamara' and 'Uth Jaag Jawani Aati Hai' contributed to the film's resonance in the independence-movement context, with Sheela carrying several of the film's songs.

The film was produced in dialogue with the rising nationalist movement — Puru's defiant speech to Alexander was widely read as an allegory for Indian resistance to British rule, and the British censors reportedly required edits.

Prithviraj Kapoor's Alexander became one of Hindi cinema's iconic performances. The film's patriotic subtext made it a touchstone of the independence decade, and its production values — battle sequences, sets, costumes — were not surpassed until the 1950s.
