Biography

Rafiq Ghaznavi (born Mohammad Rafiq in 1907 in Rawalpindi, Punjab, British India) was a singer, composer, and actor who worked across pre-Partition Hindi cinema before continuing his career in Pakistan. Descended from a family originally from Ghazni, Afghanistan, he was educated at Islamia College, Lahore, and trained in classical music under ustads of the Patiala gharana, becoming a well-known singer in Lahore before entering films.

Ghaznavi composed music for around thirty films between the 1930s and 1950s, including Behan Ka Prem (1935), Do Auraten (1937), Sohrab Modi's Sikandar (1941), and Mehboob Khan's Taqdeer (1943). He was also a performer of unusual range: in Heer Ranjha (1932), regarded as the first Punjabi film, he played the lead role as well as composing and singing its songs, and in Prem Pujari (1935) he directed the film, wrote its story and dialogue, composed and sang the songs, and played the lead character.

After the Partition of India in 1947, Ghaznavi relocated to Pakistan, where he continued to compose for Pakistani films and later worked as a music director at Radio Pakistan. He died in 1974 in Karachi.
