कथा-सार
Synopsisबिछड़ने और मिलने की एक मेलोड्रामा, जिसकी पृष्ठभूमि एक घुमंतू थिएटर है: कुंभ मेले में थिएटर-स्वामी बद्रीप्रसाद अपने नन्हे बेटे को खो देते हैं, वहीं एक जज अपनी बेटी श्यामा को। बच्चों की अदला-बदली से श्यामा थिएटर वालों के बीच पलती है और जज का परिवार लड़के को पालता है। वर्षों बाद बाबू (मोतीलाल) और श्यामा (नरगिस) में प्रेम होता है, पर उनकी उलझी हुई पहचान से अनजान जज वर्ग-भेद के कारण इस रिश्ते को रोक देता है — जब तक कि स्मृति और रहस्योद्घाटन सब कुछ सुलझा नहीं देते। आज यह फ़िल्म चौदह वर्ष की नरगिस की पहली नायिका-भूमिका के रूप में सबसे अधिक याद की जाती है।

A separated-and-reunited melodrama set against a travelling theatre: at the Kumbh Mela, theatre owner Badriprasad loses his young son while a judge loses his daughter Shyama. A mix-up of children sends Shyama to be raised among the theatre folk and the judge's family to raise the boy. Years later, Babu (Motilal) and Shyama (Nargis) fall in love, but the judge — blind to their tangled origins — forbids the match on grounds of class, until memory and revelation set the world right. The film is best remembered today as the debut leading role of the fourteen-year-old Nargis.

Rafiq Ghaznavi composed a ten-song score in which the young Shamshad Begum provides playback for Nargis while Motilal sings his own numbers — an arrangement typical of the early-1940s transition between actor-singers and dedicated playback. The lyrics are credited mainly to Meharul Qadri, with additional songs by Anjum Pilibhiti and Agha Mahshar Shirazi. The score blends ghazal-flavoured romantic pieces with lighter melodic numbers and at least two songs of patriotic colour appropriate to the pre-Independence, wartime moment.

Nargis (born Fatima Rashid) was the daughter of the singer-actress Jaddanbai, who is also associated with this production. She was barely fourteen when cast opposite the thirty-something Motilal, an age gap and youthful debut that became part of the film's lore. Mehboob Khan, then operating his own Mehboob Productions, would go on to found Mehboob Studios in 1954.

Taqdeer marks the screen debut of Nargis as a leading lady — the actress who would become one of Hindi cinema's defining stars and Mehboob Khan's own future muse (Andaz, Aan, Mother India). It is also one of the few directorial outings where Mehboob worked with composer Rafiq Ghaznavi, and a commercial success — reportedly the ninth highest-grossing Hindi film of 1943, the same banner year as Bombay Talkies' Kismet.
