When the fourteen-year-old Noor Jehan appeared in Sohrab Modi's epic Sikandar (1941), her voice was already an event. 'Jhoom Jhoom Ke Nacho Aaj' — a court celebration number set in Alexander's camp — displayed the extraordinary combination that would define her: a voice of startling power for one so young, precise classical ornaments, and an instinctive theatricality that held its own in a film built around two of Hindi cinema's biggest male presences (Prithviraj Kapoor and Modi himself). The song circulated on gramophone records long after the film's run, becoming one of the earliest documents of Noor Jehan's art to reach a national audience.

Rafiq Ghaznavi's scoring for the dance number is deliberately opulent — strings layered, tabla driving at a parade rhythm, the harmonium providing harmonic support. The setting is a formal court context, so the arrangement is more ornate than Lahore's folk-influenced productions of the same year, leaning into Bombay-Minerva's epic register.

The lyric is a standard court-celebration structure — dance, sing, celebrate — but the 'mangal geet' (auspicious song) framing gives it a ritual dimension that suits the historical drama context.

Noor Jehan's presence in Sikandar was the result of Pancholi's Lahore connections — she had already recorded for Pancholi, and her reputation as an exceptional child performer had spread. Her appearance in a prestige Bombay production at this young age was itself news.

One of the earliest documented performances of Noor Jehan in a major Hindi film — her first encounter with Bombay's mainstream production machine. The voice heard here is already the voice that would dominate two decades and two countries.
