नूर जहाँ: एक आवाज़ का उदय

In 1941 Noor Jehan appeared before Bombay in Sikandar — the fifteen-year-old from Lahore whose voice was already the Queen of Melody, the world just didn't know it yet.

Allah Wasai was born in Kasur — a small Punjab town that has produced singers for centuries. Her father played instruments, several siblings performed. The voice's exceptionality was clear at seven — that carrying power that fills a large hall, that pitch control that comes before training. The family came to Lahore. There she worked in theatre as 'Baby Noor Jehan', received classical training and absorbed Punjab's folk repertoire — both simultaneously, like two rivers meeting.

Ghulam Haider had made Khazanchi for Shamshad Begum — but he also knew Noor Jehan's voice, its power and the different register from Shamshad's. When a court singer was needed for Sohrab Modi's Sikandar (1941), Pancholi's network put Noor Jehan forward. At fifteen she was singing in a major Bombay production — with Prithviraj Kapoor and Sohrab Modi, two of Hindi cinema's biggest presences. The first step toward the Queen of Melody.

In 1941, two voices left Lahore that would change Hindi film music: Shamshad Begum's folk-power and Noor Jehan's classical-folk combined voice. Both Punjabi, both connected to Ghulam Haider, both bringing a different aesthetic that was to come not from Calcutta but from Lahore. But where Shamshad would remain a playback singer, Noor Jehan would become a complete artist — singer, actress, director.

Noor Jehan would go to Pakistan in 1947 — a decision that would shrink her to a historical voice for India while making her 'Mallika-e-Tarannum' in Pakistan, singing across two countries for fifty years. But in 1941, singing in Sikandar's court, both possibilities were open — and the voice was already what history would remember.
