Barsaat and the Birth of the RK-SJ Era

Two young men walked into Prithvi Theatres in Bombay sometime in the mid-1940s. Shankardas Kesarilal — Shankar — played tabla; Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal — Jaikishan — played harmonium. Both were from humble provincial backgrounds; both had come to Bombay chasing music; both had found work with Prithviraj Kapoor's legendary Prithvi Theatres company, where Raj Kapoor — the great man's son — was also learning his craft.

When Raj Kapoor set up R.K. Films in 1948 and began preparing his second directorial venture, Barsaat, he had a choice for music director. The established names — Naushad, Husnlal-Bhagatram, Anil Biswas — were available. He chose the two young musicians from Prithvi Theatres instead. He was twenty-five years old. They were approximately the same age. The three of them, together with lyricists Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri — also newcomers — would go on to create the most celebrated run of film music in Indian cinema's history.

Barsaat (1949) was the test. Shankar-Jaikishan had never scored a feature film. Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri had rarely written film lyrics. Raj Kapoor was making only his second film as director. The result was not a tentative first step — it was a fully realised statement of intent.

'Hawa Mein Udta Jaye' announced a sound: light, Western-inflected, melodically irresistible, orchestrated with a brightness that Hindi film music had not quite heard before. Shankar-Jaikishan had absorbed not just Hindustani classical music but the Western popular and light classical tradition — they were the first film composers to use the accordion as a regular orchestral voice, to think in terms of melody supported by Western harmony.

Lata Mangeshkar — fresh from the 'Aayega Aanewala' eruption — was the natural choice for the female voice. The partnership that formed in Barsaat (1949) lasted through Awara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai (1960), Sangam (1964), Mera Naam Joker (1970) — through the entire arc of Raj Kapoor's cinema.

The RK Films violin logo — two bows, one violin — is a tribute to Barsaat. Raj Kapoor told interviewers late in his life that the image came from a shot in the film: Nargis holding a violin in the rain. The logo is memory made permanent, the emblem of an era that started with a red dupatta flying in the wind and never really ended.

Shankar-Jaikishan's technical contribution to Indian film music was also structural: they were among the first composers to write full orchestral arrangements rather than directing arrangements to be worked out on the session floor. Their scores were pre-planned, notated, rehearsed. They brought the discipline of the Western concert hall to the Bombay film studio and fused it with the melodic vocabulary of Hindustani music. The result was a new synthesis — not Western, not classical Indian, but recognisably its own thing: the RK sound.
