A mother the law robbed of her sonप्रभात फ़िल्म कंपनी की 'अमर ज्योति' (1936) में वी.

In Prabhat Film Company's Amar Jyoti (1936), V. Shantaram fashioned a story far ahead of its time. The harsh patriarchal laws of an ancient seaport kingdom strip Saudamini of custody of her infant son. Refused justice, this woman does not bow — she turns to the sea and resolves to make war on the state itself.

Durga Khote brought Saudamini to life with such fire that it became the most memorable role of her career. Mistress of sword and ships, this pirate-queen takes the tyrannical minister of justice, Durjaya (Chandra Mohan), head-on. Shanta Apte too featured in the adventure. A woman warring against the state was a rare, almost unprecedented sight on the Indian screen.
