Synopsis

A 1943 Ranjit Movietone social drama written and directed by Kidar Sharma, set in Calcutta and woven around the Durga Puja festival of Bengal. The film established Monica Desai as a leading actress and was among the most commercially successful Hindi releases of the year, anchored by a Bengali-folk-flavoured score from Khemchand Prakash with lyrics by Kidar Sharma himself.

The Soundtrack

Khemchand Prakash's score for Gauri leaned on Bengali folk tunes in keeping with the film's Durga Puja setting, with lyrics written by Kidar Sharma. The singing was carried largely by the film's actor-singers — Brijmala, Shamim and Rajendra Singh among them — in the pre-playback convention of the period, with Vasant featuring on one duet.

Behind the Scenes

Kidar Sharma functioned as a near-complete authorial unit on Gauri — director, writer and lyricist — at a time when he was establishing himself among the most distinctive song-writing directors of Hindi cinema. Among the young people in the production was Raj Kapoor, then near the very beginning of his film life.

Significance

Gauri was the seventh highest-grossing Indian film of 1943 and a landmark in the careers of Kidar Sharma, who wrote story, screenplay, dialogue and lyrics, and Monica Desai, whom it launched. It also sits early in the screen story of Raj Kapoor, who appears in a minor role years before stardom. Musically it is part of Khemchand Prakash's prolific Ranjit period, in which he repeatedly drew on regional folk colour.

Legacy

Gauri is remembered as a commercial high point of Ranjit Movietone's 1943 slate, the film that made Monica Desai a name, and an early Kidar Sharma writer-director showcase. Its folk-leaning Khemchand Prakash songs reflect the regional-music borrowing that characterised much Hindi film scoring of the early 1940s.
