Biography

Naseem Akhtar was a playback singer of 1940s Hindi cinema, born in 1920 into a musically inclined family. She began her career singing on Lahore Radio, where her voice caught the ear of composer Pandit Amarnath, who gave her a film break in Nishani (1942). She then moved to Bombay and became one of the busy female voices of the decade, recording roughly seventy-two songs across some forty films between 1942 and 1949. Her filmography includes Bhai (1944), Pehli Nazar (1945), Keemat (1946), Shahjehan (1946) — where she sang the well-remembered "Aag Lagi Dil Mein" — and Sindoor (1947), which gave her the popular duet "Kisi Ke Madhur Pyar Mein" with Sushil Sahu. In an era before a handful of voices dominated playback, she worked with nearly every major composer of the day, including Naushad, Khemchand Prakash, Anil Biswas, Ghulam Mohammed, Shyam Sunder, C. Ramchandra and Khurshid Anwar. After Partition she migrated to Pakistan, but her singing career there never regained the momentum of her Bombay years, and she gradually withdrew from films. She died in Lahore on 11 May 2007. Her 1940s recordings, several from 1944 alone, remain her legacy — documents of a transitional moment when the classically tinged, radio-trained female voice ruled Hindi film song.
