The Monographपरिचय Overview

A female solo from Laila Majnu (1945), composed by Pandit Gobind Ram to Tanveer Naqvi's words and issued on the Young India label as one side of MP 658, backed with 'O Jane Wale'. The disc index compiled from the record labels credits the vocal to Naseem Akhtar, one of the three women engaged to sing for Swarnlata's Laila; hindigeetmala instead credits Zohrabai Ambalewali. Both women sang elsewhere on this soundtrack, so neither attribution is implausible; this entry follows the disc reading and flags the alternative.
The Music

Gobind Ram's setting is a mid-tempo film ghazal, the format that carried more of the 1945 soundtrack than any other: a melody stated once, decorated lightly on repetition, and built to end cleanly inside the three-and-a-half minutes a ten-inch shellac side allowed. The scoring of the period keeps the accompaniment thin — harmonium and tabla under the voice, a sarangi or violin taking the instrumental link between stanzas — because everything, singer and players together, was captured live to a single master with no possibility of correction. What survives on the disc is therefore a performance rather than a construction.
The Poetry

'Jaan-e-tamanna' — literally the life or soul of desire — is one of the compound honorifics Urdu poetry uses to address the beloved without naming them, alongside jaan-e-jaan, jaan-e-bahaar and their relatives. The construction flatters and distances at the same time: it raises the addressee into an abstraction, which is precisely the move that lets a public song be sung to a private person. Pairing it with a salaam, the formal greeting of respect, puts the whole utterance into the register of courtly address rather than intimacy, and that decorum is the point in a story where the lovers are never permitted to meet as equals in public.
The Story

Laila Majnu was made by Nazir's Hind Pictures banner in Bombay in 1945, with Nazir as Majnu and Swarnlata as Laila. The heroine's singing was shared out among Amirbai Karnataki, Zohrabai Ambalewali and Naseem Akhtar — an arrangement that looks strange from a post-Lata vantage point but was completely routine then, since the female voice was cast per song rather than per character. Naseem Akhtar had a busy mid-1940s in exactly this kind of assignment. The record that carries this song, Young India MP 658, was pressed by the National Gramophone Record Manufacturing Company of Bombay.
The Legacy

Nothing about this song entered the wider repertoire; it survives because a collector kept the disc and catalogued it. That is, in fact, the usual fate of the 1945 output — a year in which around 670 songs were recorded across some 74 Hindi films, of which only a handful are remembered. What the record does preserve is a working snapshot of Naseem Akhtar's voice in her most active period, and of a mode of film singing that would look old-fashioned within five years, once the lighter, higher female timbre of the late 1940s became the industry default.
