The Monographजीवनी Biography

Gobind Ram (often styled Pandit Gobind Ram) was a Lahore-trained music director who became one of the most sought-after composers in Hindi and Punjabi cinema during the 1940s. He began his film career with Jeevan Jyoti (1937) and achieved his first major success with Himmat (1941); his next film, the Punjabi production Mangti (1942), became a landmark hit — reportedly the first Punjabi film to run a silver jubilee — and featured South Asia's first female qawwali, establishing him as one of the era's leading composers.
Alongside contemporaries such as Master Ghulam Haider, G. A. Chishti, Pandit Amarnath, and Shyam Sunder, Gobind Ram is regarded as one of the pioneers of the Punjab school of film music, though his own compositions leaned toward mainstream 1940s Hindi film idioms — light music, ghazals, and thumris with a subtle folk inflection — rather than distinctly Punjabi folk forms. He worked extensively with singer Shamshad Begum, recording 86 songs together across 19 films, and is credited with helping introduce singers Zohrabai Ambalewali, Zeenat Begum, and Mohammed Rafi to Hindi cinema. His other credits include Pagli, Aabroo and Salma (all 1943), Laila Majnu and Hamara Sansar (1945), Do Dil and Doosri Shaadi (1947), Dil Ki Duniya (1949), Jal Pari (1952), and Raj Mahal (1953); his final film was Naqab (1955), starring Madhubala and Shammi Kapoor, after which he left the industry. No record of his birth or death dates appears to survive in accessible public sources.
