Overview

An all-male qawwali sung by S. D. Batish, Mohammed Rafi and chorus, composed by Pandit Gobind Ram to Tanveer Naqvi's words. It is the single best-known item from Laila Majnu (1945) and the reason the film is still written about: Rafi does not merely sing it from behind the screen, he appears in it, bearded and in the qawwali line, singing for his own on-screen presence rather than dubbing another actor. Writers on early Rafi treat this as his first screen appearance in a Hindi film; his second was Jugnu in 1947. Commentators who have watched the sequence note that he is genuinely hard to pick out.

The Music

The number is built on the qawwali frame that Hindi cinema had absorbed from the dargah courtyard: a lead voice states the line, the group answers it, and hand-clap and dholak drive the tempo forward in a controlled climb rather than a steady pulse. Gobind Ram keeps the ensemble male and unaccompanied by any female counter-voice, which is unusual enough in 1945 film scores to make the track stand out on the album. The interest of the recording for later listeners is the two voices at its front — S. D. Batish, a classically trained Punjabi singer who would later teach Indian music in California, and a Rafi so early in his career that the mature timbre everyone recognises is only just forming.

The Poetry

'Jalwa' is one of the load-bearing words of Urdu devotional and love poetry — the manifestation, the flash of the beloved's presence that the eye cannot survive unchanged. The title states the classic conditional of that tradition: whoever has seen your jalwa has been altered by it. Because Persian-Urdu ghazal deliberately refuses to separate the earthly beloved from the divine one, a qawwali built on this line works in both registers simultaneously, which is exactly why the form suits a Laila-Majnu film: Majnu's madness is the standard example, in this poetry, of love that has crossed out of the human scale into something the world reads as derangement and the poets read as arrival. Tanveer Naqvi, a Lahore poet who wrote plainly and singably, keeps the diction accessible enough for the chorus to carry it.

The Story

By 1945 Mohammed Rafi had been in Bombay barely a year, brought there from Lahore after singing on radio, and was picking up small assignments — a duet in Gaon Ki Gori, a solo for Gobind Ram in Hamara Sansar, and this qawwali. Nazir's Hind Pictures production put him physically into the frame. Gobind Ram, who had already used Rafi that same year, composed the number; Rafiq Ghaznavi, the film's other composer, was busy elsewhere on the score singing for Nazir himself. The moment is small in screen time and enormous in retrospect, and it is the single fact about Laila Majnu (1945) that every later account repeats.

The Legacy

This is the song that keeps a modest 1945 film in the historical record. Every survey of Mohammed Rafi's beginnings passes through it, usually in one sentence: first screen appearance, Laila Majnu, 1945, in beard, in a qawwali. The film itself did not enter the standard repertoire and its other songs are largely forgotten, but this track is repeatedly uploaded, clipped and annotated precisely because of who is standing in the second row. As a document it is also a reminder of how the industry then worked — that the man who would sing for three generations of Hindi film heroes began by singing for himself, in a chorus, for a producer-director who would leave for Lahore two years later.

Margin Notes

This qawwali is cited as Mohammed Rafi's first on-screen appearance in a Hindi film. His second was in Jugnu (1947); after that he stayed behind the microphone.

Rafi appears in beard as part of the qawwali group, which is why commentators who have watched the sequence say he is difficult to identify with certainty on screen.

S. D. Batish, the other lead voice, was a classically trained Punjabi singer who later emigrated to the United States and taught Indian classical music in Santa Cruz, California.

Gobind Ram also used Mohammed Rafi that same year in Hamara Sansar (1945), where Rafi sang the solo 'Ae Dil-e-Nakaam Tamanna' — so 1945 gives two Gobind Ram scores built on the young voice.
