Biography

Tanveer Naqvi (born Syed Khursheed Ali; 16 February 1919 – 1 November 1972) was an Urdu and Punjabi poet and film lyricist who wrote for Hindi cinema before Partition and for Pakistani (Lollywood) cinema afterward. Descended from a family of Persian writers, he began composing poetry at age 15 and published his first collection in 1940.

He entered Indian cinema with the 1941 film Swami, directed by Abdul Rashid Kardar, and over the following years wrote lyrics for close to 200 films. He is best remembered for the songs of Anmol Ghadi (1946) and Jugnu (1947), both starring Noor Jehan and Dilip Kumar, which numbered among the biggest musical hits of the era. He married Eidan Bai, elder sister of singer-actress Noor Jehan, and moved in progressive literary circles alongside figures such as Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

After Partition, Naqvi relocated to Lahore and continued writing lyrics for Pakistani films including Teri Yaad (1948), Salma (1960), and Hamraaz (1967), also composing patriotic verse during the 1965 India-Pakistan war. Regarded as one of the foremost Punjabi poets of his generation, he won three Nigar Awards. He died in Lahore on 1 November 1972.
