The Monographजीवनी Biography

Ustad Jhande Khan (c. 1866 – 11 October 1952) was a pioneering music director of early Hindi and Punjabi cinema. Born in Jammu, he moved to Lahore for his early musical training, learning harmonium under Syed Mir Qudrat Ali Hyderabadi, a music director associated with Parsi theatre, before relocating to Bombay, where he studied under Nazir Khan, Chajju Khan and Khadim Hussain Khan of the Bhendi Bazaar gharana. He was also an accomplished sarangi player.
He worked as a music director for stage and theatre companies, including productions of Agha Hashr Kashmiri, before moving into cinema with Devi Devyani (1931). Working extensively for Ranjit Movietone, he is credited with well over 100 film scores across a career spanning roughly two decades, including Radha Rani, Sati Savitri, Tara Sundari (1934), Bharat Ki Beti (1935), Dukhtar-e-Hind (1934), and Pagli and Shehenshah Akbar (both 1943). His best-known work is the score for Chitralekha (1941), for which he composed the songs entirely within a single raga. Naushad, Ghulam Mohammed and Hemant Kumar were among the assistants who trained under him.
After the Partition of India in 1947, disillusioned with the changing film-music scene, Jhande Khan migrated to Gujranwala in Pakistan, where he died on 11 October 1952.
