Biography

Vanmala (born Susheela Devi Pawar, 23 May 1915 – 29 May 2007) was an actress-singer of Hindi and Marathi cinema. Born in Ujjain into an aristocratic Maratha family — her father was Colonel Bapurao Anandrao Pawar — she trained as a teacher before playwright Acharya Atre introduced her to filmmakers V. Shantaram, Master Vinayak, and Baburao Pendharkar. She made her screen debut in the Marathi film Lapandav (1940).

Her performance caught the attention of Sohrab Modi, who cast her opposite Prithviraj Kapoor in the historical epic Sikandar (1941), making her a star overnight. She went on to appear in roughly 22 Hindi films and 10 Marathi films, and in several of them — including Vasantsena (1942), Raja Rani (1942), Dil Ki Baat (1944), and Aarti (1945) — she sang her own songs on screen, in keeping with the era's tradition of singing actresses. She was also a producing partner at Atre Pictures.

Vanmala is best remembered for the title role of the self-sacrificing mother in Shyamchi Aai (1953), the Marathi film that won India's first National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1954. She largely retired from films around 1953-54. A committed nationalist associated with the freedom movement, she died in Gwalior on 29 May 2007 at the age of 92.
