Biography

Vasant Desai (9 June 1912 - 22 December 1975) was an Indian music director born in Sonawade village, Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. Influenced in childhood by his grandfather, a singer of folk songs and kirtans, he joined Prabhat Film Company at the age of 17, initially working as an actor and singer, including a role in Khooni Khanjar (1930), before moving fully into music composition during the 1940s.

Desai became the principal composer for director V. Shantaram, scoring music for the majority of Shantaram's films from Shakuntala (1943) onward, including Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957), and Sampoorna Ramayan (1961). He also composed for Vijay Bhatt's Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) and, later, Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Guddi (1971), which introduced playback singer Vani Jairam with the song "Bol Re Papihara."

Known for grounding his film songs in classical raags, Desai worked selectively, composing for only around 46 films across his career, including the notable Marathi films Amar Bhoopali (1951) and Shyamchi Aai (1953). He received the Padma Shri in 1967. He died on 22 December 1975 in an elevator accident at his Bombay apartment building after a full day of recording.
