Biography

Vasant Kumar Naidu was born on 5 June 1915 into a South Indian family that had settled in Burma; amid the unrest of Burma's independence movement in the 1930s, the family walked from Rangoon back to Madras, where they lived for some years before Vasant Kumar moved alone to Bombay to pursue a career in music. A skilled instrumentalist able to play various string instruments as well as the harmonium, he broke into the Hindi film industry as a music director in 1939 with Thunder and Pakke Badmash.

Over the following years he composed music for 22 films through 1947, including Beda Paar (1944), working mostly for smaller banners on B- and C-grade action pictures rather than prestige productions. He occasionally sang as well, performing a duet with Khan Mastana for Mere Sajan (1941). Without a mentor or the backing of a major studio, Naidu struggled to move beyond this tier of the industry; by one account he was passed over for at least one significant assignment that went instead to composer C. Ramchandra.

Naidu settled in Bombay's Parel neighborhood, where he supported an extended joint family that included his mother and siblings under one roof. He died on 16 October 1951, survived by his only daughter, Pramila Naidu.
