The Monographजीवनी Biography

Indubala (1899 – 1984) was among the most important singers of the gramophone era's second generation — the link that joined Gauhar Jaan's world to the modern musical life of radio and the long professional career. Born in Amritsar and raised in Calcutta's Rambagan quarter, Indubala grew up inside the professional singing tradition that had supplied India's first record stars. Her greatest fortune was her teacher — Gauhar Jaan herself, from whom she learnt the delivery of thumri and dadra; the relationship is among the best-documented guru-shishya links in early record history. In the early 1920s she began recording for the Gramophone Company and quickly became a favourite voice in both the Bengali and Hindi-Urdu markets — from Bengali tappa, kirtan and modern songs to Hindustani dadra and ghazal. She stayed active into the age of talkies and radio — among the early female voices of Calcutta radio, and on stage for decades. Until her death in 1984 she was regarded as the living memory of the tradition that had begun with Gauhar Jaan. Honoured in later life by government and music institutions, she is described by historians as the bridge between the gramophone's first generation and radio's first generation.
