Synopsisभगवती चरण वर्मा के प्रसिद्ध 1934 के हिंदी उपन्यास पर आधारित, चित्रलेखा मौर्य-कालीन पृष्ठभूमि में रची एक ऐतिहासिक-दार्शनिक नाट्यकथा है। नगरवधू चित्रलेखा से सामंत बीजगुप्त प्रेम करता है, जबकि तपस्वी कुमारगिरि सद्गुण की खोज में संसार त्याग देता है — और कथा इन सबकी नियति को पाप, सुख और वैराग्य के एक चिंतन में बुनती है। केदार शर्मा की निर्देशक के रूप में पहली फ़िल्म, यह एक बड़ी व्यावसायिक सफलता रही और अपने 'प्रसिद्ध स्नान-दृश्य' तथा भारत भूषण के परदे पर पदार्पण के लिए याद की जाती है।

Adapted from Bhagwati Charan Verma's celebrated 1934 Hindi novel, Chitralekha is a historical-philosophical drama set in the age of the Mauryan court. The courtesan Chitralekha is loved by the nobleman Samant Bijgupt, while the ascetic Kumargiri renounces the world in pursuit of virtue — and the story weaves their fates into a meditation on sin, pleasure and renunciation. Kidar Sharma's directorial debut, the film was a major commercial success and is remembered for its 'famous bathing scene' and Bharat Bhushan's screen debut.

The music carried an unusual story behind it: Ustad Jhande Khan, a noted classical musician, began as composer and built the score on classical ragas such as Bhairavi and Asavari. During production he left over creative differences with Sharma, and A. S. Gyani — who also acted in the film as Kumargiri — took over the music direction. Of the ten recorded songs, roughly four are credited to Jhande Khan, four to Gyani, and a couple shared or uncredited. All lyrics are by Kedar Sharma. Ramdulari carries most of the female playback.

Kidar Sharma had risen through New Theatres in Calcutta and turned director with this adaptation of a novel he admired. The casting of an unknown Bharat Bhushan in a small role would prove historically significant. The mid-production change of music director — Jhande Khan out, A. S. Gyani in — is a rare documented instance of a composer being replaced partway through a 1940s film, and it explains the split song credits seen in later listings.
