A song of youth and blossoming desire from Chitralekha (1941), with lyrics by Kedar Sharma. Its springtime garden imagery belongs to the sensuous register of the film, which adapts Bhagwati Charan Verma's novel about love, pleasure and renunciation in a Mauryan court. The score was begun by classical master Jhande Khan and completed by A. S. Gyani. Singer credit for this track is not documented in available listings.

The Poetry

The lyric builds its entire architecture on a single, sustained metaphor: youth (joban) as a fragrant garden in full bloom. Kedar Sharma, who wrote the song while also directing the film, draws on a Sufi-classical image that was already centuries old — the heart as a deer (mrig) and desire as the musk (kastoori) that the deer unknowingly carries. The poignancy of the image lies in the paradox: the seeker circling the world in search of fragrance, not knowing it resides within. The phrase 'man mrig aur joban kastoori' compresses this philosophical idea into a single, memorable line. The refrain's image of fragrance spreading through the world adds a quality of inevitability — youth cannot be concealed any more than musk can be. The song sits squarely in the sensuous-philosophical register that Bhagwati Charan Verma established in his source novel, where pleasure and renunciation are two faces of the same reality.

The Story

Chitralekha (1941) was directed by Kedar Sharma — the same man who wrote its lyrics — for Film Corporation, Calcutta. Based on Bhagwati Charan Verma's celebrated 1934 Hindi novel of the same name, the film is set in the court of Chandragupta Maurya in ancient India and centres on the courtesan Chitralekha, whose allure ensnares the courtier Bijagupta. A nobleman enlists the ascetic Kumaragiri to break their bond, only for the hermit himself to succumb to temptation — a meditation on desire, renunciation, and the futility of moral judgment. Miss Mehtab played the lead role and became particularly famous for the film's bathing sequence. The music was begun by Ustad Jhande Khan, who employed classical ragas Bhairavi and Asavari in the score, and portions were completed by A.S. Gyani, who also appeared in the cast as Kumaragiri. The film was Bharat Bhushan's acting debut, and it became the second-highest grossing Hindi film of 1941. 'Joban Ki Bagiya Mehki Mehki' belongs to the film's sensuous-philosophical register. The singer's name for this specific track is not documented in surviving records.

The Legacy

Chitralekha (1941) cast a long shadow on Hindi cinema. Kedar Sharma was so attached to the material that he remade it himself in 1964, this time with Meena Kumari in the title role and Ashok Kumar as Kumaragiri — a rare instance of a director returning to his own first major success. The 1941 version's use of classical ragas Bhairavi and Asavari in a commercial film score was an influential early experiment: Ustad Jhande Khan's approach demonstrated that the grandeur of Hindustani classical music could survive the transition to celluloid, a lesson that later composers including Naushad would build upon. The film also launched Bharat Bhushan, who would go on to play the title role in Baiju Bawra (1952), arguably the most celebrated classical-music film in Hindi cinema history.
