Dharmavati has no fixed Hindustani pakad. This phrase highlights the raga's defining tension between komal Gandhara and tivra Madhyama followed by a rise to shuddha Ni—an ascending movement that creates a quality of yearning resolution not found in any of the 10 Hindustani thaats.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Dharmavati emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Raag Dharmavati is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Dharmavati melakarta (#59). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Peace/Tranquility (शांत), making it suitable for compositions that evoke peaceful, meditative emotions. It is traditionally performed during night hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Dharmavati is the 59th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-raga system, belonging to the Disi chakra (melakartas 55–60), the 10th of the 12 chakras. Within the Disi chakra, it occupies the fifth position. The Disi chakra uses chatusshruti Rishabha (shuddha Re, 2 semitones) paired with sadharana Gandhara (komal Ga, 3 semitones), and Dharmavati uses chatusshruti Dhaivata (shuddha Dha, 9 semitones) and kakali Nishada (shuddha Ni, 11 semitones). The combination of komal Ga with tivra Ma and shuddha Ni creates a scale with an unusual internal contrast: the lower tetrachord has a characteristic 'minor' flavour while the upper tetrachord resolves brightly. Venkatamakhin classified it in the Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE) and Govindacharya confirmed it in the Samgraha-Chudamani (c. 1800 CE). The name 'Dharmavati' means 'upholder of righteousness' or 'possessing dharma.' It is an important parent melakarta in the Carnatic system, with notable janya ragas derived from it, and is performed with some regularity in concerts by artists who explore the less familiar melakartas.

Teaching & Learning
Practice Tips

Begin with slow aalapana to internalize the raag's swaroopa (melodic form)

Practice the arohana and avarohana patterns with a tanpura drone

Listen to recordings by master performers to understand the raag's gamakas (ornamentations)

Work on kalpanaswaram (improvisation) within the raag's framework

Common Mistakes

Using incorrect gamakas that belong to a different raag

Not maintaining proper swar sthana (note placement)

Rushing through phrases without allowing the raag bhava to develop

A Specimen Comparison

Hemavati (58th melakarta) and Dharmavati are adjacent melakartas in the Disi chakra. Hemavati uses Komal Nishad (N2) while Dharmavati uses Kakali Nishad (N3, the highest/brightest Ni variant). This difference in the seventh scale degree gives Dharmavati a slightly brighter, more luminous quality in the upper register compared to Hemavati's somewhat darker, more introspective feel — both ragas share their other swaras (Re, Ga♭, Ma♯, Pa, Dha) in common.

Dharmavati is slightly brighter and more luminous in the upper register; Hemavati is somewhat darker and more introspective

Both Kalyani (Carnatic, equivalent to Hindustani Yaman) and Dharmavati use tivra Madhyam, but they differ fundamentally in their Gandhara: Kalyani/Yaman uses Antara Ga (natural/shuddha Ga), while Dharmavati uses Sadharana Ga (komal Ga). This single difference fundamentally changes the emotional landscape — Kalyani/Yaman's natural Ga contributes its familiar grandeur and uplift, while Dharmavati's komal Ga pulls the raga inward, creating a bittersweet coexistence of the ascending tension of tivra Ma and the gentler, more reserved quality of the komal Ga.

Puriya Kalyan (Hindustani) also uses komal Ga with tivra Ma but employs komal Re instead of shuddha Re — this single Re difference creates a meaningfully different melodic personality, with Puriya Kalyan feeling more restrained and introverted than Dharmavati's slightly brighter opening from shuddha Re.

In Film Music

Dharmavati (59th melakarta) is a relatively rare Carnatic raga that has not established a presence in Hindi film music. Its note set — combining Shuddha Rishabham (natural 2nd), Sadharana Gandharam (komal 3rd), Prati Madhyamam (sharp 4th), Shuddha Dhaivatum (natural 6th), and Kakali Nishadam (sharp 7th) — creates an intriguing and somewhat unusual melodic landscape. The combination of a komal Gandhar with a tivra Madhyam within a single scale is particularly distinctive and not commonly encountered in the Hindustani tradition. This unusual interval structure, while musically fascinating, lies outside the tonal vocabulary that shaped Hindi film music. In Carnatic concert music, Dharmavati is known for a quality of meditative peace (shanta rasa) combined with the subtle tension that the tivra Madhyam introduces — a tension that is then resolved by the grounding of shuddha Dha and the brightness of kakali Ni. Its concert life is limited but the raga has inspired some dedicated classical compositions. No Hindi film songs are documented as being based on Dharmavati.
