Dhatuvardhini has no Hindustani-tradition pakad. Its scale contains both shatshruti Rishabha (Re♯) and antara Gandhara (Ga) together—a combination absent from all 10 Hindustani thaats—alongside tivra Ma, komal Dha, and shuddha Ni. This ascending phrase captures the raga's dense chromatic character in Carnatic alapana.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Dhatuvardhini emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Dhatuvardhini is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Dhatuvardhini melakarta (#69). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Heroism/Valor (वीर), making it suitable for compositions that evoke energetic, bold emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Cultural Significance

Historical Significance

Dhatuvardhini is the 69th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-raga system, belonging to the Aditya chakra (melakartas 67–72), the 12th and final chakra. It occupies the third position within this chakra. The Aditya chakra uses shatshruti Rishabha (R3, 3 semitones) paired with antara Gandhara (G3, 4 semitones), and the third position uses shuddha Dhaivata (D1, 8 semitones) and kakali Nishada (N3, 11 semitones). All melakartas in this chakra share the distinctive characteristic of two adjacent Ri-Ga positions (3 and 4 semitones), a configuration that has no equivalent in the Hindustani 10-thaat system. Venkatamakhin classified it in the Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE). The name 'Dhatuvardhini' means 'increaser of essence or substance' (dhatu = substance/essence, vardhini = increaser). This is one of the lesser-known melakartas of the Aditya chakra and is rarely featured in Carnatic concerts, though it occupies a theoretically significant position as part of the concluding group of the 72-melakarta scheme.

A Specimen Comparison

Nasikabhushani (#70), within the Aditya chakra (melakartas 67-72), is identical to Dhatuvardhini in all notes except that Nasikabhushani uses shuddha Dha (natural sixth) where Dhatuvardhini uses komal Dha (flat sixth). This single note difference gives Nasikabhushani a brighter, more open upper register, while Dhatuvardhini's komal Dha introduces a shadowed, introspective quality before resolving to shuddha Ni.

Jyotiswarupini (#68), one step below in the Aditya chakra, replaces Dhatuvardhini's shuddha Ga and shuddha Ni with komal Ga and komal Ni respectively, producing a considerably darker and more inward-turned character. All six ragas of the Aditya chakra share the highly distinctive tivra Re (Re♯), which sets this entire group apart from ragas built on shuddha or komal rishabha.

In Film Music

Dhatuvardhini is a purely Carnatic concert raga and has no established presence in Hindi film music. Its combination of tivra Re (sharp second), tivra Ma (augmented fourth), and komal Dha (flat sixth) produces a tonal palette that sits outside the standard Hindustani thaat framework — no Hindustani thaat or raga closely mirrors this scale. The raga finds its home in the Carnatic sabha season, rendered as elaborate alapana and kriti performances by veena and violin masters. Listeners familiar with Dhatuvardhini through the Janaka Raga Kriti Manjari series by Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna will know it primarily as a systematic exploration of the 69th melakarta rather than as a vehicle for popular composition.
