Released on 25 April 1942, Khandaan was the film that gave the teenage Noor Jehan her first leading role and introduced Shaukat Hussain Rizvi — whom she would marry the same year — as a director. Produced at Dalsukh Pancholi's Lahore studio, the family social drama followed the proven formula of Pancholi's Khazanchi (1941): an unremarkable melodrama frame built to carry an extraordinary Ghulam Haider score, this time anchored by Noor Jehan's young, agile voice.

Ghulam Haider's second landmark Pancholi soundtrack — after Khazanchi — refines the percussion-forward Punjabi idiom he had pioneered, but now wraps it around Noor Jehan's youthful, melismatic voice rather than Shamshad Begum's robust timbre. The romantic numbers carry a new tenderness; the duet 'Ud Ja Ud Ja Panchhi' even places Haider himself in front of the microphone alongside his young star.

Khandaan marked the directorial debut of Shaukat Hussain Rizvi and the leading-role debut of Noor Jehan, who had until then appeared mostly as a child performer. The two married in 1942, the year of the film's release, beginning a personal and professional partnership that would shape Lahore — and later Pakistani — cinema.

Khandaan is the film in which Noor Jehan announced herself — both as actress and singer — as the rising voice of Lahore cinema. Her readings of 'Tu Kaunsi Badli Mein' and 'Mere Liye Jahan Mein Chain Hai Na Qarar Hai' remained among the most cherished recordings of her early career, and the film cemented the Noor Jehan–Ghulam Haider–Shaukat Rizvi axis that would dominate Subcontinental film music through the 1940s and, after Partition, in Pakistan.

Khandaan is a foundational text of the Lahore Punjabi-social-drama tradition and the launchpad of Noor Jehan's stardom. Its songs stayed in circulation across the Subcontinent for decades, and the film stands beside Khazanchi as confirmation of Ghulam Haider as the architect of the Punjabi-inflected popular film music that ruled commercial cinema from 1941 onward.
