भक्त कबीर

A devotional biopic of the fifteenth-century mystic-poet Kabir, the weaver-saint of Banaras whose dohas dissolved the wall between Hindu and Muslim devotion. The film dramatises Kabir's life of plain labour and uncompromising spiritual song, and is built almost entirely around his own verses set to music. It is best remembered today as the screen debut of Bharat Bhushan, who would go on to become Hindi cinema's pre-eminent saint and poet on film.

The soundtrack is essentially Kabir set to music: the lyrics are credited to Kabir himself, with adaptation by Pandit Shivkumar, and the entire score is composed by Himangshu Dutta. The songs are bhajans and nirgun pads — Mere Mann Kab Bhajiyo Satnam, Bhaj Mann Ram Rahima, the syncretic Alif Allah Aur Krishna Ya Karim Kaho — devotional, plainspoken and verse-led rather than ornamental. Mehtab sings the syncretic number; the film also gave Jagmohan Sursagar his Hindi-film singing debut.

The film is remembered chiefly as the launching pad of Bharat Bhushan, who arrived from Aligarh and made his screen debut here in the title role of Kabir. The choice was prophetic: Bhushan's gentle, devotional screen persona made him the natural casting for poet-saints, and he would later become indelibly associated with Baiju Bawra and Mirza Ghalib.

Bhakta Kabir is historically notable on two counts: it launched Bharat Bhushan, the actor who would define the screen image of the Hindi-film poet-saint through the 1950s, and it marked the Hindi-film debut of the Bengali composer Himangshu Dutta, one of the lyrical melodists of the New Theatres orbit. The score draws its lyrics directly from Kabir's own corpus — making the film a rare instance of a saint's authentic verse forming the spine of a soundtrack.

Bhakta Kabir stands at the head of two long lineages in Hindi cinema. It is the origin point of Bharat Bhushan's career, and through him of the entire poet-saint biopic tradition that peaked with Baiju Bawra (1952). And by setting Kabir's authentic nirgun verse to film music, it anchors the small but important corpus of films that treated the medieval bhakti and sant poets not as costume drama but as living devotional song.
