A 1942 Hindi social drama produced by Kirti Pictures and directed by Gunjal, featuring Shobhana Samarth opposite Harish. Built around the social tensions of an arranged marriage and the divisions of wealth and status that test love, the film belongs to the studio-era tradition of song-driven domestic melodrama.

Behind the Scenes

Released in late 1942 (most catalogues cite a November release), Barat came out in the year of the Quit India Movement, when Bombay's studios produced under heavy wartime censorship. Lyricist Raghunath Brahmbhatt was a noted Gujarati stage poet, and his association links the film to the Parsi-Gujarati theatrical lineage that fed many early studio productions.
Significance

Barat is a representative example of the second-tier Bombay studio output of 1942 — films whose commercial life rested largely on their gramophone songs. Its score, credited to Master Ratanlal and Khemraj with lyrics by the Gujarati-rooted poet Raghunath Brahmbhatt, gave playback singers Rajkumari and Kaushalya prominent solo numbers in a year when playback singing had become fully standardised.
Legacy

Like many 1942 productions of its scale, Barat survives chiefly through song catalogues and gramophone listings rather than a circulating print. It is documented today mainly for placing Shobhana Samarth in a lead role and for its Rajkumari and Kaushalya recordings.
