Biography

Jagmohan Sursagar, born Jaganmoy Mitra on 6 September 1918 in Calcutta, was a Bengali-origin singer and music composer whose career in Indian light and film music spanned roughly six decades. He joined All India Radio in Calcutta and rose to prominence after winning an all-India classical music competition; newspaper reports of his win printed his name as "Jagmohan" instead of "Jaganmoy," and the misprint stuck as his professional identity. In 1945 an assembly of Calcutta's classical music pundits honoured him with the title "Sur Sagar" (Ocean of Music). His playback and non-film singing career began in the early 1940s, including work for New Theatres productions such as Bhakta Kabir and Jawab (both 1942), and he is remembered for the widely praised Bengali-Hindi song "O Varsha Ke Pahale Badal" from Meghdoot (1945), composed by Kamal Dasgupta. As a composer in his own right, he is best known for "Pyar Ki Yeh Talkhiyan," sung by Lata Mangeshkar for the film Sardar (1955). He continued to perform on stage into the 1970s, including the Yadein retrospective concert in 1971. In recognition of his contribution to Indian music, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 1999. Jagmohan Sursagar died in 2003.
