Shamshad Begum was the first great female voice of Punjabi-inflected popular Hindi film music — the singer who, with Ghulam Haider's Khazanchi (1941), introduced a new timbral register to Hindi cinema: robust, carrying, folk-rooted, and emphatically physical. Born in Lahore in 1919, she received training in Punjabi folk music and Hindustani classical tradition and began recording in the late 1930s. Her collaboration with Ghulam Haider on Khazanchi made both their careers. She moved to Bombay in the early 1940s and became one of the dominant playback voices of the decade alongside Noor Jehan, recording with virtually every major composer of the period. After Lata Mangeshkar's rise she adapted, and continued recording into the 1980s. She remained in India after Partition, making her one of the rare Lahori Muslim singers who built her career entirely in Bombay.
