Manavati foregrounds the rare shuddha gandhara (G1 / atikomal Ga) together with komal rishabha (R1). This ascending-descending phrase highlights the enharmonic Ga that gives the raag its tense, chromatic quality. No Hindustani-tradition pakad exists for this melakarta; the phrase above is derived from the scale structure.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Manavati emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Manavati is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Manavati melakarta (#5). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Compassion/Pathos (करुण), making it suitable for compositions that evoke melancholic, contemplative emotions. It is traditionally performed during afternoon hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

ऐतिहासिक महत्व Historical Significance

Manavati is the 5th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, placed in the first chakra, Indu. Venkatamakhi codified all 72 melakartas in the Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE), grouping them into 12 chakras of six parent ragas each. Manavati belongs to the shuddha madhyama half (melakartas 1–36) and sits early in the theoretical edifice alongside Kanakangi, Ratnangi, Ganamurti, and Vanaspati. Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna composed a kriti in Manavati as part of his Janaka Raga Kriti Manjari project, which systematically covered all 72 melakartas. The raag is rarely performed in public concerts and remains chiefly an object of theoretical study for advanced Carnatic students.

Teaching & Learning
अभ्यास सुझाव · Practice Tips

Begin with slow aalapana to internalize the raag's swaroopa (melodic form)

Practice the arohana and avarohana patterns with a tanpura drone

Listen to recordings by master performers to understand the raag's gamakas (ornamentations)

Work on kalpanaswaram (improvisation) within the raag's framework

सामान्य गलतियाँ · Common Mistakes

Using incorrect gamakas that belong to a different raag

Not maintaining proper swar sthana (note placement)

Rushing through phrases without allowing the raag bhava to develop

Kanakangi (#1) has both komal Dha and komal Ni (the darkest of all within the Indu chakra), while Manavati has shuddha Dha and shuddha Ni — making Manavati the brightest in the upper tetrachord within the Indu chakra.

Vanaspati (#4) is the raag immediately preceding Manavati and has shuddha Dha and shuddha Ni as well — but actually shares the exact same notes as Manavati in standard enumeration, differing only by a quarter-tone refinement. The distinctions within this chakra are extremely subtle for most ears, making these melakartas primarily of theoretical and pedagogical interest.

In Film Music

Manavati is one of the most theoretically specialized melakartas in the 72-melakarta system, belonging to the Indu chakra (the very first chakra, melakartas 1–6). Its scale features the flattest possible Re (shuddha/komal Re, the lowest Rishabha) and an extremely flat Ga (atikomal Ga, doubly flat — the lowest Gandhara). This rare combination of the two lowest possible forms of Re and Ga has no analogue in Hindustani classical music and consequently has never appeared in Hindi film music. In the Carnatic tradition itself, Manavati is performed very rarely — it belongs primarily to the domain of theoretical study (lakshana) and is used in demonstrations of the complete 72-melakarta spectrum rather than as a regular concert raag with an established repertoire. Listeners interested in the most emotionally deep-pitched scales in Indian music should explore the Kanakangi chakra group (melakartas 1–6) in Carnatic music, while noting that none of these ragas have Hindustani equivalents or film music presence.
