Ratnangi uses komal rishabha (R1) and atikomal gandhara (G1) together with komal dhaivata (D1) and kaisiki nishada (komal Ni / N2). G1 has no Hindustani equivalent and prevents any thaat mapping. The characteristic phrase foregrounds the dense clustering of lowered tones in both the lower and upper tetrachords.

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Ratnangi emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Ratnangi is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Ratnangi melakarta (#2). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Peace/Tranquility (शांत), making it suitable for compositions that evoke peaceful, meditative emotions. It is traditionally performed during morning hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Ratnangi is the 2nd melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the second raag of the first chakra, Indu (melakartas 1–6). It belongs to the shuddha madhyama half (melakartas 1–36). The scale was enumerated by Venkatamakhi in the Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE). Ratnangi neighbours Kanakangi (#1, the first melakarta) and Ganamurti (#3) in the foundational Indu chakra, which contains some of the most tonally dense scales in the system. The name means 'jewel-bodied' or 'bejewelled'. Its scale groups four komal or near-komal notes (Re, Ga, Dha, Ni) with shuddha Ma and Pa at the centre, creating a heavy, dark tonal palette. Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna composed a kriti in Ratnangi as part of his Janaka Raga Kriti Manjari.

More to Know

In Film Music

Ratnangi, the 2nd Carnatic melakarta, has no documented use in Hindi film music. Its scale includes atikomal gandhara (G1), a microtone absent from the Hindustani and film music pitch inventory, making it inaccessible to composers working in the North Indian tradition. The raag's exceptionally dense cluster of lowered tones gives it a theoretical character without a practical performance tradition in either Hindustani or film contexts.
