Jhankaradhwani has no Hindustani-tradition pakad. This phrase highlights the raga's most unusual feature: the komal Dha (D1) immediately followed by N1 (shuddha Nishada/chatusshruti Dhaivata, only one semitone higher)—a compressed upper interval that gives the raga its characteristic compressed, bell-like resonance in the upper register.

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Jhankaradhwani emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Jhankaradhwani is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Jhankaradhwani melakarta (#19). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Compassion/Pathos (करुण), making it suitable for compositions that evoke melancholic, contemplative emotions. It is traditionally performed during morning hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Cultural Significance

As part of the rich tapestry of Indian classical music, Raag Jhankaradhwani represents the deep connection between melodic structure and emotional expression that defines the Carnatic tradition.

Historical Significance

Jhankaradhwani is the 19th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-raga system, the first member of the Veda chakra (melakartas 19–24), the 4th of the 12 chakras. The Veda chakra uses chatusshruti Rishabha (shuddha Re, R2, 2 semitones) paired with sadharana Gandhara (komal Ga, G2, 3 semitones). The first position within this chakra uses shuddha Dhaivata (D1, 8 semitones) and shuddha Nishada / chatusshruti Dhaivata (N1=D2, 9 semitones)—a compressed D1-N1 upper interval of only one semitone. Venkatamakhin classified it in the Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE). The name 'Jhankaradhwani' means 'sound of tinkling bells' or 'ringing resonance' (jhankara = tinkling/ringing, dhwani = sound), an evocative reference that may relate to the compressed upper-register interval that creates a bell-like resonance. As the first melakarta of the Veda chakra, Jhankaradhwani opens a set that includes the important Kharaharapriya (22) three positions later. It is rarely performed independently in Carnatic concerts.

A Specimen Comparison

Both share Sa Re Ga♭ Ma Pa. Kharaharapriya has shuddha Dha and komal Ni♭ in the upper tetrachord — giving it the familiar, folky Kafi feel known from dozens of Hindi film songs. Jhankaradhwani's Dha♭ (komal) and Ni♭♭ (double-flat) in the same position create a far darker, more compressed upper register. If you know the Kafi scale, Jhankaradhwani sounds like Kafi with both upper notes aggressively flattened.

Despite being adjacent numerically, Hatakambari has a completely different scale — Re♭ Ga Ma Pa Dha♯ Ni. It begins a different sub-group within the melakarta system. The two should not be confused.

Natabhairavi shares Sa Re Ga♭ Ma Pa Dha♭ with Jhankaradhwani, but uses komal Ni♭ (not double-flat). Natabhairavi is far more commonly performed and corresponds to Hindustani Asavari. The key distinguishing note is the Ni: Jhankaradhwani's double-flat Ni♭♭ is its most distinctive feature.

In Film Music

Jhankaradhwani (Melakarta #19) occupies a unique and rarely explored corner of the Carnatic melakarta system. Its scale — Sa Re Ga♭ Ma Pa Dha♭ Ni♭♭ — introduces a double-flat Ni♭♭ (ati-komal Ni), a pitch so low in the seventh position that it enharmonically overlaps with the shuddha Dha. This creates an unusual melodic compression in the upper register. The raga has no established Hindustani equivalent and no footprint in Hindi film music. In Carnatic music itself, Jhankaradhwani rarely appears in concert programmes — it is known primarily through systematic melakarta presentations and educational demonstrations. The name 'Jhankaradhwani' (the resonating sound of bells or metals) is evocative and poetic — suggesting the shimmering, metallic ring of a brass bell fading into silence. This image of reverberant sound, however, is not matched by a living performance tradition. For Hindi film listeners, Jhankaradhwani is most illuminatingly understood by contrast: its lower four notes (Sa Re Ga♭ Ma) are close to the Kafi-family feel familiar from many Hindi film songs, but the double-flat Ni♭♭ in the upper register introduces a strangeness that no Hindi film song has exploited.
