Natabhairavi's scale — Sa Re komal Ga Ma Pa komal Dha komal Ni — is identical to Asavari thaat in Hindustani music. The characteristic phrase emphasises the three komal svaras (G2, D1, N2) through both the slow ascent and the expressive descent from the upper Sa, touching all three altered notes before returning home.

Raag Natabhairavi is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Natabhairavi melakarta (#20). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Compassion/Pathos (करुण), making it suitable for compositions that evoke melancholic, contemplative emotions. It is traditionally performed during morning hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Historical Significance

Natabhairavi is the 20th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the second raag of the fourth chakra, Veda. Its seven-note scale — Sa Re komal Ga Ma Pa komal Dha komal Ni — is exactly equivalent to the Hindustani Asavari thaat, making it one of the few melakartas with a clean cross-system identification. Venkatamakhi codified the raag in the Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE). The Veda chakra (melakartas 19–24) contains scales in this subdued, shadowed tonal region. Natabhairavi is parent to numerous janya raags, most famously the Carnatic Bhairavi — one of the most beloved concert ragas — establishing it as one of the more musically significant melakartas in the system. Thyagaraja and other Trinity composers drew on this tonal space when working in the Bhairavi idiom. Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna also composed a kriti in Natabhairavi as a melakarta per se.
Teaching & LearningBegin with slow aalapana to internalize the raag's swaroopa (melodic form)
Practice the arohana and avarohana patterns with a tanpura drone
Listen to recordings by master performers to understand the raag's gamakas (ornamentations)
Work on kalpanaswaram (improvisation) within the raag's framework
Using incorrect gamakas that belong to a different raag
Not maintaining proper swar sthana (note placement)
Rushing through phrases without allowing the raag bhava to develop

More to Know- raag-hanumatodi — Hanumatodi — हनुमतोडी — Hanumatodi (#8) is the Carnatic equivalent of Hindustani Bhairavi. The sole difference from Natabhairavi is in Rishabha: Natabhairavi uses shuddha Re (R2, natural second), while Hanumatodi uses komal Re (R1, minor second). Hanumatodi's komal Re opens the raag with immediate pathos and tenderness — it is bhairavi-like from the very first note. Natabhairavi's shuddha Re gives a slightly more upright, less mournful opening before the komal Ga introduces the pathos-quality. In Hindustani terms, this is the difference between Bhairavi and Asavari. — Natabhairavi: shuddha Re (R2, natural second); Hanumatodi: komal Re (R1, minor second). - raag-kharaharapriya — Kharaharapriya — खरहरप्रिया — Kharaharapriya (#22) shares shuddha Re and komal Ga with Natabhairavi — but uses shuddha Dha (D2) and shuddha Ni (N2) in the upper register, making it the Carnatic equivalent of Hindustani Kafi thaat. Where Natabhairavi is sorrowful and contemplative (with three komal notes: Ga, Dha, Ni), Kharaharapriya is warmer and more expressive, with shuddha Dha and Ni giving the upper tetrachord lightness and flow. — Both share shuddha Re (R2) and komal Ga (G1); Natabhairavi: komal Dha (D1), komal Ni (N1); Kharaharapriya: shuddha Dha (D2), shuddha Ni (N2). — Natabhairavi: sorrowful and contemplative; Kharaharapriya: warmer and more expressive.
- raag-jaunpuri — Jaunpuri — जौनपुरी — Jaunpuri is the most film-famous Asavari-family raag. It takes the Asavari note set and applies vakra movement — Dha and Ga are used only in descent, while Sa Re Pa dominate the ascent. Natabhairavi (as a sampurna melakarta) uses all seven notes freely in both ascent and descent, making it tonally richer but stylistically different from the vakra-phraseology of Jaunpuri.
In Film Music
Natabhairavi holds a special position among the obscure Carnatic melakartas because its note structure — Sa Re komal Ga Ma Pa komal Dha komal Ni — is precisely equivalent to the Hindustani Asavari thaat. This is one of the clearest cross-tradition parallels in Indian classical music: Natabhairavi is the Carnatic melakarta counterpart of the entire Asavari family of Hindustani raags. The Asavari thaat in Hindustani music has produced famous raags including Asavari, Jaunpuri, Desi, Adana, and Sindhura — and through these raags, Natabhairavi's note palette has indeed entered Hindi film music, though never under the Carnatic name.
Hindi film composers who used Asavari-inflected scales include luminaries such as S.D. Burman, Madan Mohan, and Naushad. The komal Ga, komal Dha, and komal Ni together create a mood of pathos, dignified sorrow, and philosophical depth — a colour that appears in several memorable film songs. However, these songs are always attributed to Hindustani Jaunpuri or Asavari, never to Natabhairavi. There are no Hindi film songs that can be responsibly identified as being 'in Natabhairavi' by name — the Carnatic melakarta label simply does not exist in the Hindi film vocabulary. What does exist is the note palette, alive in the Asavari-based repertoire of Hindi film music.
