Vishal Bhardwaj (born 4 August 1965) is an Indian filmmaker, music composer, and playback singer who has become one of contemporary Hindi cinema's most distinctive voices. Born in Chandpur, Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh, he is the son of Ram Bhardwaj, a sugarcane inspector who also wrote poetry and film lyrics, and Satya Bhardwaj, a homemaker; the family later moved to Meerut, where Bhardwaj played cricket for the state's under-19 team before turning to music.

He debuted as a music director with the children's film Abhay (1995) and gained wider recognition for his score for Gulzar's Maachis (1996), which won him the Filmfare R.D. Burman Award for New Music Talent. He went on to compose for films including Satya (1998) and Godmother (1999), the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Music Direction — one of nine National Film Awards he has received across his career. He made his directorial debut with Makdee (2002), for which he also composed the music, and went on to critical acclaim for his contemporary Indian adaptations of William Shakespeare's tragedies: Maqbool (2003, from Macbeth), Omkara (2006, from Othello), and Haider (2014, from Hamlet).

Beyond composing and directing, Bhardwaj frequently performs as a playback singer in his own films and maintains a long-standing creative partnership with lyricist-poet Gulzar, whom he regards as a mentor. He produces films under his banner VB Pictures and is married to playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj.
