Dil Dushman (दिल दुश्मन) is a centerpiece track from the Khufiya (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), composed by Vishal Bhardwaj with lyrics by his longtime collaborator Gulzar, sung in its male version by Arijit Singh. Released through VB Music as part of the nine-track album on 7 September 2023, ahead of the film's 5 October 2023 Netflix premiere, the song exists in two parallel renditions on the soundtrack — a 'powerful' male version voiced by Arijit Singh and a 'haunting and melodious' female version by Sunidhi Chauhan — a structure Vishal Bhardwaj has used before to let a single melody carry two distinct emotional readings. Vishal Bhardwaj has spoken publicly about first hearing Arijit Singh's voice years earlier on a scratch recording of 'Phir Le Aaya Dil,' a moment he credits with convincing him of the singer's range; Dil Dushman continues that long working relationship. The song's official VB Music video has drawn over three million YouTube views.

Vishal Bhardwaj's composition sits in his familiar register of restrained, ghazal-adjacent melody rather than conventional item-song or dance-track structure — a slow-building mid-tempo arrangement that gives Arijit Singh's voice room to move from a quiet, guarded opening into more anguished, held notes as the song progresses. The choice to record two vocal versions of the same melody (Arijit Singh, then Sunidhi Chauhan) is a Bhardwaj production signature, letting the composer explore how gender and vocal texture change the emotional read of an identical tune.

Gulzar's lyric frames the heart itself as a watchman turned adversary — 'har dhadkan har saans pe pehra rakhta hai' (it keeps a guard over every heartbeat, every breath) — a classic Gulzar move of turning an internal, intangible feeling into a concrete, almost militarised image. The title's blunt paradox, 'dil dushman' (the heart as enemy), captures a mind at war with its own longing, fitting neatly into Khufiya's spy-thriller frame where every character is, in some sense, also guarding a secret from themselves.

Khufiya, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and based on the novel Escape to Nowhere, follows Krishna 'KM' Mehra (Tabu), a Research & Analysis Wing operative hunting a mole selling India's defence secrets — a mission that turns personal after the death of her former lover, an undercover RAW agent, and unfolds alongside her discovery of her own identity through flashbacks involving Charu (Wamiqa Gabbi). Produced by VB Pictures and released on Netflix on 5 October 2023, the film was shot across Delhi and Canada. Dil Dushman's two-version structure mirrors the film's own doubled perspective — a story told from more than one emotional vantage point on the same underlying events.

While Dil Dushman did not chart internationally, its official VB Music video has crossed over three million YouTube views, and the song remains a frequently cited highlight of the Khufiya soundtrack in Hindi music press alongside Mat Aana — both praised for extending Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar's long-running body of atmospheric, literary film songs into the streaming era.
