The harmonium anchors the track in Old Delhi's sonic world; guitar brings a contemporary lightness; and the ensemble vocal arrangement (Bhardwaj, Jazim Sharma, Himani Kapoor, Gulzar) creates the effect of a chorus of memory rather than a single singer.

Gulzar's 'sheher tere' — 'your city' — makes the city a possession of the beloved, and the narrator a permanent visitor in it. This reversal — it is her city, not his, even though he lives in it — is the quiet devastation at the song's heart.

Sheher Tere was composed during the same sessions that produced the rest of the Gustaakh Ishq EP — Vishal Bhardwaj working from the Old Delhi setting of Vibhu Puri's film to create a soundscape that felt specific to that world. The five-and-a-half minute duration was retained despite its uncommercial length because both Bhardwaj and Puri felt it was the song's natural span.
