The Monographजीवनी Biography

C. Ramchandra, born Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar on 12 January 1918 in Puntamba, Ahmednagar district (then Bombay Presidency), was one of Hindi cinema's most innovative music directors and a playback singer in his own right. He trained in classical music under Vinayakbua Patwardhan at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and under Shankarrao Sapre of Nagpur, and worked across his career under several names, including Chitalkar, Anna Sahib, and Ram Chitalkar.
He began as an actor in Marathi films before turning to music direction, gaining wider recognition for his score for Bhagwan Dada's Sukhi Jeevan (1942). His music for Albela (1951) was a major box-office success, and his work on Anarkali (1953) is regarded as among his finest achievements. Influenced by Western swing and jazz musicians such as Benny Goodman, he was known for pairing Western instruments like the saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, and guitar with Indian instruments such as the sitar, tabla, and sarangi, and for his widely celebrated duets with singer Lata Mangeshkar. He also produced several films under his own New Sai Productions banner and composed music for Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bhojpuri cinema in addition to Hindi.
Ramchandra received two Filmfare Award nominations for Best Music Director (1955 and 1957) and published an autobiography, The Symphony of My Life, in 1977. He died on 5 January 1982 in Mumbai.
