Overview

The opening number of Nagma-e-Sahra (1945) and the only song of the film with three documented voices: Khan Mastana, Hamida Banu, and Chitalkar — the playback name of the composer C. Ramchandra himself. A tajposhi is a crowning, and the song is the congratulatory address that goes with one: mubarak ho, may this be blessed. It was issued in two parts, Part 1 and Part 2, which in 1945 meant a single extended ceremonial sequence pressed onto the two faces of one ten-inch 78-rpm disc.

The Music

Nothing of the arrangement survives to be described from the record itself; what the credit list establishes is the scale. A three-voice number with a male lead singer, a female lead and the composer's own voice on the same side of a disc is, in 1945 Bombay, the signature of a set-piece — a court or crowd scene scored for chorus rather than for an intimate solo. C. Ramchandra was in these years working steadily towards the light, rhythm-forward, march-and-marchlike manner that would become his trademark, and a coronation processional is precisely the kind of assignment on which that instinct got its practice.

The Poetry

The title works in two registers at once. Tajposhi is the formal Perso-Urdu word for the placing of a crown, a word of court protocol; mubarak ho is the ordinary everyday blessing anyone in north India says at a wedding or a birth. Ehsan Rizvi's line joins the two, so that the ceremony is addressed in the language of a household celebration rather than of a chancellery — the crowd's felicitation rather than the herald's proclamation. Jalsa, the gathering, is the third term, and it is a public word: the song is sung at the assembly, not to the throne.

The Story

Nagma-e-Sahra — Song of the Desert — was directed by Bhagwan Dada for his own Jagriti Pictures and premiered in Bombay on 22 December 1945. The cast is a set of Perso-Arabic names: Master Vithal as Feroz, Khurshid Jr. as the princess Nargis, Bhagwan as Altamash, Amarnath as Jalal, Kavita Devi as Ishrat. No plot summary of the film survives in the reference literature and no print is known, so a coronation song is one of the few pieces of internal evidence about what actually happened on screen: somewhere in this desert adventure, a crown changed hands and a crowd sang about it.

The Legacy

The song's afterlife is a catalogue entry. It survives as a Columbia Records listing in the HFGK-derived databases and as a title on hindigeetmala and myswar; no restored transfer is known to circulate. Its documentary value is in the credit line rather than the music: it is one of the comparatively few places where Khan Mastana and Hamida Banu are recorded singing together, with C. Ramchandra joining them — a snapshot of the small pool of voices the low-budget Bombay circuit drew on in the mid-1940s.

Margin Notes

'Chitalkar' was the name C. Ramchandra used exclusively as a playback singer, keeping it separate from 'C. Ramchandra' the composer and 'Ram Chitalkar' the composer-of-stunt-films — three working identities for one man.

Khan Mastana (d. 1972), also billed as Hafiz Khan Mastana, worked both as a singer and as a music director through the 1940s; he is the only male voice other than the composer's documented anywhere on this soundtrack.
