Overview

The continuation of the coronation number that opens the soundtrack of Nagma-e-Sahra (1945), catalogued as a separate title because it occupied the second face of the disc. Ehsan Rizvi wrote it and C. Ramchandra composed it. Unlike Part 1 — credited to Khan Mastana, Hamida Banu and Chitalkar — no singer is recorded for Part 2 in any source consulted, and none is assumed here, although a continuation would normally carry the same voices.

The Music

The song's existence is itself the technical fact worth recording. A ten-inch 78-rpm side held a little over three minutes; anything longer had to be cut in two and sold as Part 1 and Part 2, and buyers turned the record over to finish the piece. Two-part songs therefore mark the film's biggest musical sequences — the qawwalis, the wedding scenes, the durbars — and in Nagma-e-Sahra the coronation is the only number that got that treatment.

The Poetry

As the second half of a single lyric, this part continues the address begun in Part 1: a jalsa, a public gathering, saluting a tajposhi, a crowning, in the everyday idiom of mubarak ho rather than in court formula. What the verses of the second half actually say is not recoverable — no text and no recording of either part has been located — so the description here stops at the structure the title gives.

The Story

Nagma-e-Sahra was directed by Bhagwan Dada for Jagriti Pictures and premiered in Bombay on 22 December 1945, with Master Vithal as Feroz, Khurshid Jr. as Nargis, Bhagwan as Altamash, Amarnath as Jalal and Kavita Devi as Ishrat. A crowning is one of the very few narrative events the surviving documentation actually attests to — the film has no synopsis on record — and the fact that it needed two sides of a disc suggests it was the picture's principal spectacle.

The Legacy

The two Tajposhi sides are the only trace left of what was presumably the film's largest scene. Neither has been reissued and neither is known to survive as audio. The pair is listed here in full because splitting a song across two catalogue entries is exactly how the 78-rpm era recorded its own ambitions, and dropping the second half would misrepresent the soundtrack.

Margin Notes

Atul's Song A Day

No singer is recorded for this title in any consulted source. One voice is documented for the film without a song attached — the archival blog Atul's Song A Day lists Naseem Akhtar among the singers who worked for C. Ramchandra on Nagma-e-Sahra — so an unattributed title such as this one may be hers.

'Chitalkar' was the name C. Ramchandra used exclusively as a playback singer, keeping it separate from 'C. Ramchandra' the composer and 'Ram Chitalkar' the composer-of-stunt-films — three working identities for one man.

Nagma-e-Sahra premiered in Bombay on 22 December 1945, sharing its opening night with Albeli; Baburao Patel reviewed it in filmindia in March 1946 under the heading 'Song Of Desert — A Modest Presentation'.
