Bhudhan is an obscure janya raag of the Carnatic classical tradition. Its name derives from Budhan (Tamil/Telugu: புதன், बुधन्), the Tamil and Telugu name for the planet Mercury and the Navagraha deity associated with intelligence, communication, and the arts. In Tamil, Wednesday is called Budhavaaram (புதன்வாரம்) in honor of this deity. The raag's name may link it to the broader family of Navagraha-devoted compositions that became prominent in South Indian music particularly through Muthuswami Dikshitar's 19th-century Navagraha Kritis. Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta taxonomy (c. 1620 CE) and the subsequent encyclopedic work of Govindacharya codified thousands of Carnatic janya raags, but Bhudhan specifically has not been documented with clear swaras or parent melakarta in mainstream reference works. Assigning a Hindustani thaat without confirmed swaras would be speculative.
