Historical Significance

Bhujagamani is a rare janya raag of the Carnatic tradition. Its name is a compound of bhujaga (भुजग), Sanskrit for serpent, and mani (मणि), meaning jewel or gem — rendering the meaning the gem of serpents or the jewel among serpent-raags. In Hindu iconography, serpents hold a place of great sanctity: Shesha Naga forms Vishnu's cosmic couch, Vasuki encircles Shiva's neck, and the nagamani (serpent gem) is a recurring motif in South Indian folk and classical art. Raag families named after serpents appear across both Carnatic and folk traditions of South India. Within Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta framework (c. 1620 CE), this raag would be classified as a janya of one of the parent melakartas, but the specific parentage and swaras of Bhujagamani have not been codified in standard Carnatic references. Without verified swaras, no Hindustani thaat can be determined.
