Natakapriya uses komal rishabha (R1) and sadharana gandhara (komal Ga / G2) in the lower tetrachord, then shuddha dhaivata (D2) and kaisiki nishada (komal Ni / N2) above Pa. This combination — komal Re, komal Ga in ascent with shuddha Dha — does not correspond to any Hindustani thaat. The phrase highlights the contrast between the flat lower register and the natural Dha.

Raag Natakapriya is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Natakapriya melakarta (#10). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Romance/Beauty (श्रृंगार), making it suitable for compositions that evoke romantic, beautiful emotions. It is traditionally performed during afternoon hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

ऐतिहासिक महत्व Historical Significance

Natakapriya is the 10th melakarta in the Carnatic 72-melakarta system, the fourth raag of the second chakra, Netra (melakartas 7–12). It belongs to the shuddha madhyama half (melakartas 1–36). Venkatamakhi described this scale in the Caturdandi Prakasika (1660 CE). The name Natakapriya — meaning 'one who is fond of drama / dance' — reflects an older Carnatic tradition of giving evocative names to melakartas. Its combination of two komal notes in the lower octave (Re and Ga) with shuddha notes above Pa places it outside the Hindustani thaat system. Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna included a kriti in Natakapriya in his Janaka Raga Kriti Manjari. The raag is studied primarily in academic and pedagogical contexts.

A Specimen Comparison

Hanumatodi (#8) is the Carnatic equivalent of Hindustani Bhairavi and shares the same komal Re and komal Ga with Natakapriya. The crucial difference is in Dhaivata: Hanumatodi uses komal Dha (D1), giving the upper tetrachord its characteristic Bhairavi-flavour of deep, pained melancholy. Natakapriya uses shuddha Dha (D2), which lightens the upper register considerably — preventing the raag from settling into Bhairavi's profound sorrowfulness and giving Natakapriya a slightly brighter, more romantic quality.

Dhenuka (#9), Natakapriya's immediate predecessor, shares Sa, komal Re (R1), komal Ga (G1), Ma, Pa — but has komal Dha and shuddha Ni, whereas Natakapriya has shuddha Dha and komal Ni. In Film Music

Natakapriya, the 10th melakarta of the Carnatic system and the fourth raag of the Netra chakra, is a concert-specialist raag with no verified presence in Hindi film music. Its note combination — komal Re, komal Ga, shuddha Ma, Pa, shuddha Dha, komal Ni — creates an unusual tonal configuration that places it between several Hindustani raag families without belonging clearly to any of them. The komal Re and komal Ga resemble the Bhairavi or Asavari families; but Natakapriya's shuddha Dha (natural sixth) diverges from both — Bhairavi has komal Dha and the Asavari family also tends toward komal Dha in descent. This in-between quality means that no standard Hindustani raag maps precisely onto Natakapriya, and Hindi film composers — who worked almost exclusively within Hindustani categories — would have found no familiar framework for it.

In South Indian film music, Natakapriya has occasionally appeared in a supporting or background capacity in Tamil devotional films, but specific attributions are not well-documented. The raag's dominant rasa of Shringara (romance and beauty) gives it a lighter emotional character than most of its chakra-siblings, and it finds its most natural expression in varnam, tillana, and kriti compositions that explore this gentle romantic-devotional quality through the interplay of komal and shuddha notes.
