Rekha Bhardwaj is one of Hindi cinema's most distinctive playback voices — a husky, ghazal-steeped timbre that stands deliberately apart from the polished mainstream. Born in Delhi in 1964, she was first taught music by an elder sister at home and later trained formally under the Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Amarnath. At Hindu College in the mid-1980s she met Vishal Bhardwaj, the composer and filmmaker she married in 1991, and whose scores would become the canvas for much of her best work. Her debut album, the Sufi-flavoured Ishqa Ishqa (2002), took nearly a decade to reach release, but film recognition followed with the earthy 'Namak Ishq Ka' in Omkara (2006). 'Sasural Genda Phool' from Delhi-6 (2009) won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer, 'Badi Dheere Jali' from Ishqiya (2010) brought the National Film Award, and she shared a second Filmfare with Usha Uthup for 'Darling' from 7 Khoon Maaf (2011). Songs like 'Phir Le Aya Dil' (Barfi!, 2012) and 'Kabira' (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, 2013) cemented her as the voice filmmakers reach for when a song needs ache and texture. She has also recorded in Bengali, Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri and Malayalam, performs Sufi music and ghazals live across the world, and remains active in current Hindi film soundtracks, with credits such as 'Nikat' (2024) and several 2026 releases.
