निकट

Nikat (निकट) is the second song from Kill (2024), released as a promotional single on 29 June 2024, six days ahead of the film's 5 July theatrical release. Sung by National Award-winning playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj, composed by the duo Haroon-Gavin (Haroon Pereira and Gavin Pereira), and written by Siddhant Kaushal, the ballad is picturized on lead pair Lakshya and Tanya Maniktala, offering a tender, romantic counterpoint to the film's brutal train-set action. Producer Karan Johar publicly described the Kill soundtrack — including Nikat — as embodying “the soul of the film.”

Composed by Haroon-Gavin (Haroon Pereira and Gavin Pereira) with a sparse, acoustic-leaning arrangement built around sitar, sarangi and guitar (played by Roland D'souza and Bhushan Chitnis), Nikat is deliberately the emotional exhale of the Kill soundtrack — a slow, string-led ballad set against the album's harder Punjabi-pop tracks. Rekha Bhardwaj's vocals, recorded by Alok Punjani at The Islanders Studio and mixed by Eric Pillai at Future Sound of Bombay, lean on her signature husky, classically-trained timbre to carry the song's restrained melody without ever pushing into belting or ornamentation.

Siddhant Kaushal's lyric works through a repeated declaration structure — “jhooth hoga jo main na kahoon” (it would be a lie if I didn't say it) — before landing on the title hook, “Nikat tere aayi aan, sajan laaiyaan laaiyaan” (I have come near you, my beloved, drawing close). Rather than elaborate imagery, the song builds its romantic weight through plain, direct address and repetition of “nikat” (nearness) itself — treating physical and emotional closeness as the entire argument of the song, in line with the “ride-or-die” reading offered in the label's own release materials.

Kill (2024), directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and produced by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, follows NSG commando Amrit Rathod (Lakshya, in his feature debut) as he boards a New Delhi-bound train to stop the arranged marriage of his true love, Tulika Singh (Tanya Maniktala) — only for the journey to erupt into a bloody siege when a gang of thieves led by Fani (Raghav Juyal) begins terrorizing the passengers. Nikat, released 29 June 2024, arrives as the film's romantic anchor, establishing the depth of Amrit and Tulika's bond before the carnage of the train sequences. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on 7 September 2023 as first runner-up for the People's Choice Award: Midnight Madness, before its Indian theatrical release on 5 July 2024.

Kill went on to gross ₹47.12 crore against a ₹40 crore budget and earned 15 nominations at the 70th Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director and Best Male Debut for Lakshya — a strong showing for a newcomer-led action film. Nikat's own official Sony Music India video has drawn over 7.6 million views, with additional film-version, dance-version and lyric-video uploads adding to its reach, while producer Karan Johar's public praise of the soundtrack as the film's “soul” underscored how the album's softer moments, like Nikat, were positioned as essential to the film's identity alongside its violence.
