Released on 8 January 2025 as the first single from Sky Force (Saregama), 'Maaye' is a four-minute-fifty-second patriotic elegy composed by Tanishk Bagchi, written by Manoj Muntashir, and rendered by B Praak — whose raspy, emotionally saturated voice had already established him as Bollywood's foremost grief singer through 'Filhaal' and 'Teri Mitti'. Set against the backdrop of the 1965 Sargodha airstrike depicted in Akshay Kumar's war film, the song addresses a fallen soldier's mother in the folk-inflected 'maaye' dialect, blending piano-driven contemporary production with strings that echo classical raga Bhairavi. By Republic Day (26 January 2025), it had streamed over 50 million times and was compared almost universally to 'Teri Mitti' from Kesari — cementing B Praak's status as the voice of India's patriotic moment.

Tanishk Bagchi constructs 'Maaye' on a foundation of sparse piano chords that open in the emotional register of Raag Bhairavi — the raag of farewell, devotion and dawn. The arrangement layers in strings gradually, building from intimate grief to something close to national catharsis. B Praak sings in a folk-accented Hindi that evokes rural Punjab's oral tradition of mourning — the 'maaye' form of address is a marker of that dialect's tenderness. There is no percussion for the first minute; when a light keherwa tabla enters, it feels less like rhythm and more like a heartbeat being counted. The chorus rises with layered vocals suggesting a community in mourning, not just one individual. Tanishk avoids the bombastic approach typical of Bollywood patriotic songs, instead letting grief breathe.

Manoj Muntashir, who writes in an accessible Khariboli-Awadhi blend, frames the song as a direct address from nation to mother — 'tere laal ko salaam' (salute to your son). The poem avoids the triumphalist language of conventional patriotic songs; its soldiers do not 'conquer', they 'go and don't return'. The folk inflection of 'maaye' vs standard 'maa' is deliberate — it places the song in the village, not the parade ground, making sacrifice intimate rather than abstract.

Sky Force is based on the true story of Wing Commander K.O. Ahuja and the largely unacknowledged 1965 Indian Air Force strike on Sargodha — Pakistan's most heavily defended airbase. Director Sandeep Kewlani revealed that 'Maaye' was conceptualised as the film's emotional anchor before the script was finalised. Manoj Muntashir wrote three drafts; the final one was selected because it avoided naming any specific battle or rank, making the grief universal. B Praak recorded the song in a single long session in Mumbai, reportedly moved to tears. The song was released weeks before Republic Day deliberately — by 26 January, social media was saturated with tributes set to 'Maaye'.

'Maaye' joined a short list of post-2010 Bollywood patriotic songs — alongside 'Teri Mitti' (Kesari, 2019) and 'Sandese Aate Hain' (Border, 1997) — that transcended their films to become standalone national-grief anthems. By mid-2025 it was a fixture at school independence-day events and army memorial services. Its success also confirmed B Praak's unique market position: the singer who makes India collectively weep with dignity.
