History
Saregama is today's name for India's oldest record company — the same lineage that began in 1901 with The Gramophone Company's Calcutta branch and opened the history of Indian recording in 1902 with the voice of Gauhar Jaan. For decades the business ran under the HMV name; in 1946 the Indian unit was incorporated as The Gramophone Company of India Ltd. The decisive turn came in 1985, when Rama Prasad Goenka's RPG Group bought the company from EMI; in 2000 it was renamed Saregama India Limited, after the first four notes of the sargam — sa, re, ga, ma. Surviving the swings of the cassette and CD years, the company found its real strength in the digital era: its vault of more than a lakh recordings spanning over a century — from Gauhar Jaan in 1902 to Saigal, Lata, Rafi, Asha, Kishore and R.D. Burman. Carvaan, launched in 2017 — a radio-styled digital player preloaded with 5,000 Hindi songs — carried old music back into living rooms and reversed the company's fortunes. Today Saregama (RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group) licenses its catalogue to every streaming platform, runs major YouTube channels and makes films through Yoodlee Films — a century-old vault with brand-new keys.
Era Dominance
In the streaming era Saregama is the king of retro — the largest rights-owner of old Hindi film music, non-film ghazals and classical recordings, whose songs are the first stop for every remix, reel and film-licensing deal.
Artists Roster
Saregama's vault holds the entire genealogy of Indian music: from the 78rpm discs of Gauhar Jaan and Janki Bai to K.L. Saigal, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Geeta Dutt, Mukesh and Manna Dey, and composers from Naushad to R.D. Burman.
