In a crumbling mansion (mahal), a young man (Ashok Kumar) becomes obsessed with a mysterious woman (Madhubala) who may be the ghost of a woman who died there fifty years earlier, searching for her reincarnated lover. Kamal Amrohi's gothic direction and Khemchand Prakash's haunting score — particularly 'Aayega Aanewala', sung by an uncredited Lata Mangeshkar — create the most atmospheric horror-romance in Hindi cinema history.
