The Monographजीवनी Biography

Kamal Amrohi (born Syed Amir Haider Kamal Naqvi, 17 January 1918 – 11 February 1993) was a screenwriter, lyricist, director and producer whose name became synonymous with poetic Urdu craftsmanship in Hindi cinema. Leaving Amroha for Lahore as a young man, he was spotted by singer K. L. Saigal and brought to Bombay, where he joined Sohrab Modi's Minerva Movietone. His debut assignment, Jailor (1938), carried both his story and his lyrics — songs like "Kahe Ko Ab Rove Moorakh Rove" and "Bhala Kare Bhagwan" — set to Mir Sahib's music. He went on to write for Modi's Pukar (1939) and Bharosa (1940), and later scripted Shahjehan (1946) for A. R. Kardar.
His directorial debut, Mahal (1949), created the Hindi gothic-suspense template and turned "Aayega Aanewala" into the song that announced Lata Mangeshkar to the nation. As one of the dialogue writers of Mughal-e-Azam (1960), he shared the Filmfare Best Dialogue award. His magnum opus, Pakeezah (1972), starring his wife Meena Kumari, took over a decade and a half to complete and stands among Hindi cinema's most cherished musical films; he also wrote lyrics for it, including "Mausam Hai Aashiqana". His final film as director was the opulent Razia Sultan (1983). Across five decades, Amrohi remained cinema's resident poet — a filmmaker who wrote every frame like a couplet.
