'Jaago Musafir Jaago Kholo Man Ka Dwar' is Talat Mahmood's first Hindi film song, recorded for Raj Laxmi (1945). HindiGeetMala and MySwar both credit it to Suresh Chaudhari as lyricist and to the pair Dhiren Mitra and Robin Chatterjee as composers, and Songs of Yore prints the same credit. Songs of Yore calls Raj Laxmi 'probably the first Hindi film in which Talat Mahmood acted as a singing star, though the main actors were Jahar and Kanan Devi', and MySwar records it as his first film as actor as well as singer. The title is an awakening call — wake, traveller, open the door of your mind — and beyond that title no lyric text for the song has been traced.

No contemporary account of how Dhiren Mitra and Robin Chatterjee scored this side has been traced, and the transfers in circulation are collectors' copies rather than restorations, so nothing is asserted here about the arrangement — an earlier version of this record named a raag, a taal and an instrument list for which no source could be found, and they have been removed. What is documented is the voice. Talat Mahmood was twenty-one, had been singing ghazals on All India Radio since 1939 and cutting discs for HMV in Calcutta since 1941, and the quality Wikipedia describes as his 'quivering and silky voice' is already audible here, five years before the playback career that made it famous.

The title is the whole of what survives of the lyric. 'Jaago musafir jaago, kholo man ka dwar' — wake, traveller, wake; open the door of the mind — places the song in the jagaran or awakening tradition, the sant and Sufi poets' habit of addressing the soul as a sleeper who must be roused, and the mind as a door that has to be opened rather than a state that simply arrives. 'Musafir', the Arabic-derived wayfarer, carries the other half of the convention: life as a road, the person on it as a traveller who has not woken up to the fact. What Suresh Chaudhari does with that opening in the verses is not recoverable. Neither HindiGeetMala nor MySwar carries a lyric text for this side, no other source traced carries one, and an earlier version of this record held a reconstructed text which has been deleted rather than repaired.

Talat Mahmood came to films from the ghazal, not from the studios. He was born in Lucknow in 1924, apprenticed in classical music at Marris College there, and began singing ghazals on All India Radio at sixteen. His first disc came from HMV in 1941, and in 1944 the non-film record 'Tasveer Teri Dil Mera Behla Na Sakegi' — in Wikipedia's words — 'brought Talat the fame throughout India and soon he was beckoned by the Calcutta film industry'. Raj Laxmi, made in Calcutta under the M.P. Productions banner, is where that summons landed. Songs of Yore, writing about the film in 2018, calls it 'probably the first Hindi film in which Talat Mahmood acted as a singing star, though the main actors were Jahar and Kanan Devi', and it is that article — a curation of his lesser-heard songs — that put this side back in front of listeners. What role he played in the film is not recorded by any source traced.

The song's afterlife is a documented one. Songs of Yore's author records that it 'was a part of the collection brought out by HMV in their cassettes in the 1980s eighties and I still possess it as a precious jewel' — a reissue that is the reason a 1945 Calcutta side by a then-unknown singer stayed in circulation at all. It survives today in four separate uploads, including on Talat Mahmood's official artist channel. Its value now is chronological: Talat did not become a major playback voice until 'Ae Dil Mujhe Aisi Jagah Le Chal' in Arzoo (1950), composed by Anil Biswas, so this is a recording of the voice five years before the career.
