Re♯ Ga Ma Pa Dha♯ Ni Sa'

Chalanata belongs to no Hindustani thaat: its scale contains both shatshruti Rishabha (Re♯, 3 semitones) and antara Gandhara (Ga, 4 semitones) simultaneously, a combination absent from all 10 Hindustani thaats. This ascending gamaka phrase—rising through the adjacent Re♯ and Ga to Pa and the elevated Dha♯—captures the raga's bold, energetic character in Carnatic alapana.

Vadi–Samvadi note

Vadi — In the Carnatic tradition, Raag Chalanata emphasizes Pancham (Pa) as a key resting note.

Samvadi — Sa (Shadj) serves as the complementary note.

Raag Chalanata is a complete scale with all 7 notes in both ascent and descent raga in the Carnatic classical music tradition. It is derived from the Chalanata melakarta (#36). With its Sampurna-Sampurna jati structure, this raag creates a distinctive tonal landscape. The predominant rasa is Heroism/Valor (वीर), making it suitable for compositions that evoke energetic, bold emotions. It is traditionally performed during evening hours, and its melodic contour offers rich possibilities for alapana, kalpanaswaram, and creative improvisation.

Cultural Significance

Historical Significance

Chalanata is the 36th melakarta and the last member of the Rutu chakra (melakartas 31–36), which is also the final chakra of the first set of 36 shuddha-madhyama melakartas in Venkatamakhin's Caturdandiprakasika (c. 1620 CE). The Rutu chakra uses shatshruti Rishabha (R3, equivalent to 3 semitones above Sa) paired with antara Gandhara (G3, 4 semitones), giving its melakartas a strikingly adjacent two-note cluster at the lower end. Being the sixth position in this chakra, Chalanata also uses shatshruti Dhaivata (D3) and kakali Nishada (N3) in the upper tetrachord. The name may derive from 'chala' (movement) and 'nata' (dance or drama), suggesting dynamic movement. The epithet 'heroic' (vira rasa) attributed to it in modern references may stem from this interpretation. Chalanata is rarely performed as an independent concert raga; its theoretical role within the 72-melakarta framework is more significant than its practical concert life. The katapayadi cipher encoded in its name correctly yields the number 36.

A Specimen Comparison

Both are melakartas with energetic character, but Ramapriya uses tivra Madhyam while Chalanata uses shuddha Madhyam — this fundamental difference in the fourth scale degree places them in entirely different expressive realms, despite their shared boldness.

In Film Music

Chalanata (36th melakarta) is a Carnatic raga with a distinctly heroic, energetic character (veera rasa) that has not been documented as an influence on Hindi film music. Its scale — featuring an elevated Rishabham (sharp 2nd in Hindustani terms) and an elevated Dhaivat — creates a bright, tense tonal quality that is rarely found in Hindustani ragas. Mainstream Hindi film music was shaped almost entirely by composers working in the North Indian classical tradition, who drew on Hindustani ragas; Carnatic melakartas such as Chalanata fell outside their tonal vocabulary. In South Indian cinema, Chalanata's heroic character makes it theoretically suited to action-oriented or celebratory sequences, but specific film-song attributions remain undocumented. The raga's primary artistic home remains Carnatic classical concerts, where its bold melodic contours can be explored through elaborate alapana and kriti performance.
