In classical Sanskrit music theory, Gandhari is one of the seven primary gramas (tonal frameworks) described in ancient texts like the Natyashastra of Bharata Muni (c. 200 BCE–200 CE). In Carnatic music, Gandhari appears as a distinct janya raag in certain lineages. The prefix Bhuvana gives it a cosmic or universal quality — the Gandhari of the universe.
