Bhujanga Chintamani is a rare Carnatic janya raag carrying one of the most evocative names in the serpent-raag family. Bhujanga (भुजंग) is a Sanskrit word for serpent, synonymous with naga, used in classical literature in compound epithets. Chintamani (चिंतामणि) is the legendary wish-fulfilling gem of Hindu and Buddhist mythology — a jewel capable of granting all desires, associated with both the serpent-king Vasuki and with Lakshmi's treasure. Together, the name Bhujanga Chintamani evokes the supreme jewel in the serpent family — a raag of mythological grandeur. The Chintamani motif recurs in the names of several Carnatic raags. Venkatamakhin's 72-melakarta system (c. 1620 CE) provides the theoretical framework from which all Carnatic janya raags descend, but the precise parent melakarta and swaras of Bhujanga Chintamani are not documented in standard Carnatic reference works. Without verified swaras, a Hindustani thaat assignment is not possible.
